This tutorial is made for the Chromecast with Google TV, not the old Chromecasts or Chromecast Ultra, and focuses on the wireless transfer method from an Android phone or tablet. There are dozens of apps you could use to send APKs from your phone to your Chromecast, but the easiest method we've found is through the 'Send files to TV' app — it's lightweight, fast, and very straightforward. Look for it in the Play Store and install it on both your Android phone and your Chromecast.
The app does offer an option to open the transferred file, which in the case of an APK should technically start installing it, but I found this to be super buggy. Often, the APK was never opened and the install process never initiated. That's why you might need a proper file manager or app installer on the Chromecast. Find the app and install it directly from the Play Store on your Chromecast. If you prefer a full-fledged file browser, you can get File Commander , Solid Explorer , or any other file manager. Now that you know which APK you want to sideload, you should download it to your device, then open the 'Send files to TV' app and approve its permission request for accessing media and files. Tap the big Send button and find the APK you just downloaded — it'll likely be in the Download folder.
Selecting it opens a list of recipient devices, which should include your Chromecast. Scroll over to your profile photo and click it to uncover the Settings app shortcut, then click that. Back out to the main Settings page, then scroll to and select "Apps.
Here, you'll find the File Commander app as a potential source. Click it and, after heeding the warning on the page, flip the toggle to blue in order to enable its ability to install unknown apps. Now you'll need to take the APK file you're trying to sideload and upload it to your cloud storage account.
File Commander will provide a web address for you to access on your smartphone or computer, and you can upload the file directly through your browser. Select the file and choose "Install. Note that if you're enrolled in Google's Advanced Protection program , you'll be blocked from installing the app at this point.
If you insist on proceeding, you'll need to unenroll; the process is just a couple of clicks but it may take a few hours to propagate through the system.
After installation, you can click "Open" to immediately launch the app. Otherwise, it may be listed alongside your other apps under the For You or Apps pages. Some apps that weren't designed to be used on a TV may require the usage of a mouse.
If you opted to sideload the two apps in Step 1, the process will be much easier going forward. The idea is to ensure that Google Drive Adapter is working perfectly. Cloud storage is easy to use but grants access from just about any location. This method is pretty easy and straightforward. It is the most likely that anyone who wants to migrate files from one location to another will consider it. Step 1 — The first thing you should do is to create a destination folder for all the files you need to download.
This makes it easier for you to locate and organize them. Step 3 — Select all the files or folders you want to copy and download them to the destination folder. Step 4 — Open Google Drive in your browser and log in using your Google account details. Click on this and it will open a new window. Locate the folder where the downloaded files are and select them. This method is favourable for small files but will be stressful and time-consuming for larger ones.
